When Does Shabbat End? Nightfall & Havdalah

Shabbat ends at nightfall according to Halacha and minhag—then we say Havdalah and return to weekday time with intention.

When does Shabbat end? is the Saturday-night twin of Friday’s candle lighting question. You need a trustworthy local time, a clear sense of nightfall vs. sunset, and a way to close the day with Havdalah rather than slipping into weekday mode unnoticed.

Sunset is not the end

On Friday, Shabbat begins around sundown (with candle lighting earlier). On Saturday, ending Shabbat waits for nightfall—often framed as tzeit hakochavim, the appearance of stars. Communities and poskim differ on exact minutes after sunset. Printed “Shabbos ends” or “Havdalah” times encode that decision for a given calendar.

What Shabbat7 shows

The home page shows Havdalah for your selected location alongside candle lighting, so the week’s bookends are visible together. The zmanim page surfaces shkiah, tzeit, and related times for deeper study. Treat every number as an educational aid and confirm with local authority—especially if you are new to a city’s minhag.

Havdalah: marking the difference

After Shabbat ends, we say Havdalah—distinction—over wine (or grape juice), spices, and a multi-wick flame. It is sensory: taste, smell, sight, and words that draw a line between holy and mundane. Use Shabbat7’s Havdalah section for an outline and wording as you learn.

A Saturday night checklist

  1. Check this week’s end / Havdalah time for your city before Shabbat begins.
  2. Do not assume sunset Saturday is enough—wait for your community’s nightfall.
  3. Prepare wine, besamim, and a Havdalah candle where possible.
  4. Recite Havdalah, then begin weekday activities with a soft return—not a crash.

Frequently asked questions

When does Shabbat officially end?
After nightfall (often discussed as the appearance of stars / tzeit hakochavim), using the calculation your community follows. Many calendars print a Havdalah time that already includes that standard.
Is Havdalah the same as sunset on Saturday?
No. Sunset (shkiah) is earlier. Shabbat continues until nightfall. Havdalah is recited after that time (and after saying “Baruch ha-mavdil…” if you must do weekday activity first per your rav’s guidance).
Does Shabbat end at the same clock time every week?
No. Like candle lighting, end times move with the seasons and depend on your latitude and longitude.
