Chanukah
חֲנֻכָּה
Eight nights — rededication of the Temple and pirsumei nisa.
Times for New York (ET). Approximate — confirm locally.
What to know
Chanukah remembers the rededication of the Temple and the miracle of the oil. We publicize the miracle by lighting the menorah (hanukkiah) after nightfall, adding one candle each night.
It is not Yom Tov: melacha is generally permitted, yet the evenings still deserve intention. Lighting times help you gather the household before the window slips away.
When Erev Shabbat coincides with Chanukah, light Chanukah candles first, then Shabbat candles — both before Shabbat begins. Never kindle after Shabbat has started. Confirm order and timing with your rav (minhag can differ).
Prepare with Shabbat7
- Know tonight’s lighting time for your city. Place the menorah where it can be seen safely.
- On Friday, reconcile Chanukah lighting with Shabbat candle lighting early in the afternoon.
- Shabbat7 is for planning the lighting window — once Shabbat or your focused evening begins, disconnect.
For weekly Shabbat candle lighting in general, see candle lighting times and Havdalah times. This page is for Chanukah.
