What to know
Purim recalls the rescue recorded in the Book of Esther: hidden providence, public reading of the Megillah, gifts of food, gifts to the poor, and a festive seudah.
It is not Yom Tov. Work is generally permitted, though the day’s mitzvot easily fill the clock. Walled cities from the time of Joshua (notably Jerusalem) observe Shushan Purim a day later.
Ta’anit Esther, the fast before Purim, has its own page and times.
Prepare with Shabbat7
- Find a Megillah reading before the day arrives. Prepare mishloach manot and tzedakah plans early.
- If Purim abuts Shabbat, map the calendar carefully with your community.
- Use Shabbat7 to see the date in context — then live the day offline where you can.
For weekly Shabbat candle lighting in general, see candle lighting times and Havdalah times. This page is for Purim.
