What to know
Rosh Hashanah opens the Days of Awe. It is called a day of remembrance and a day of sounding the shofar — less “party new year,” more standing before the King.
Two days are observed in the Diaspora (and commonly in Israel as well in many communities). Candle lighting welcomes each Yom Tov day where your minhag requires it; Havdalah closes the festival when it ends.
The work of the day is intentional: prayer, shofar, festive meals with symbolic foods, and a quieter phone. Shabbat7’s role is the clock before the day begins — not the soundtrack once it has.
Prepare with Shabbat7
- Check candle lighting for Erev Rosh Hashanah early in the week, then again the morning of.
- Finish cooking, timers, and tech shutdowns before candle lighting. Once Yom Tov starts, disconnect.
- If Rosh Hashanah runs into Shabbat (or the reverse), confirm the combined candle / cooking rules with your rav — do not improvise from a website alone.
For weekly Shabbat candle lighting in general, see candle lighting times and Havdalah times. This page is for Rosh Hashanah.
