Sunset mark for a fast day

Tzom Gedaliah

צוֹם גְּדַלְיָה

The Fast of Gedaliah — mourning leadership cut down.

Times for New York (ET). Approximate — confirm locally.

What to know

Tzom Gedaliah recalls the assassination of Gedaliah ben Achikam and the collapse of the remnant community in the Land after the First Temple’s destruction.

It is a minor fast: typically from dawn until nightfall. No Yom Tov candles. The day sits in the shadow of the High Holidays — sober, brief, easy to miss without a calendar.

Prepare with Shabbat7

  • Note begin and end times the day before. Hydrate and plan meals around the window.
  • If the fast is postponed for Shabbat, follow your community calendar.
  • Health comes first — ask a rav if fasting is unsafe for you.

For weekly Shabbat candle lighting in general, see candle lighting times and Havdalah times. This page is for Tzom Gedaliah.
