Tu BiShvat

What to know

Tu BiShvat is one of the four “new years” named in the Mishnah — the new year for trees, tied to agricultural and halachic cycles of fruit and orlah.

It is not Yom Tov. There is no festival candle lighting or Havdalah. Many families mark it with fruit, especially species associated with the Land of Israel, and with attention to the natural world in a still-winter month.

On Shabbat7 it sits among the year’s observances so you can see it coming — a soft date on the calendar, not a dashboard chip.

• Note the date early if you want fruit or a small family custom ready.
