Wheat mark for Shavuot

Shavuot

שָׁבוּעוֹת

The giving of the Torah — harvest and revelation.

Times for New York (ET). Approximate — confirm locally.

What to know

Shavuot marks the wheat harvest and, in tradition, the revelation at Sinai. Dairy meals, all-night learning, and the reading of Ruth are familiar customs — none of them replace the Yom Tov frame.

Candle lighting opens the festival; Havdalah closes it. In the Diaspora two days are often observed.

Coming at the end of the Omer count, it rewards weeks of noticing. Arrive prepared, not surprised.

Prepare with Shabbat7

  • Check candle lighting the day before. Finish cooking and tech before the deadline you follow.
  • If you stay up learning, still begin Yom Tov on time — fatigue is not a heter for late candles.
  • Confirm times locally. Shabbat7 is a planning aid.

For weekly Shabbat candle lighting in general, see candle lighting times and Havdalah times. This page is for Shavuot.
